La Leche' League's Take on Breastfeeding
How did the human race ever survive without nipple shields, breast pumps, mineral oil, tear-free soaps, lanolin, powders that have particles easily breathed into the lungs (no matter what the powder is) and so many products with unknowingly toxic ingredients? Is 100% organic with the price? NO!
We take the old school approach and are in total agreement with La Leche’s League International. (LLLI) This group was started around 1956 by mothers wanting to breastfeed their babies. The mission of LLLI is to help mother worldwide to breastfeed through mother to mother support, encouragement, information, education, and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and mother. LLLI’s philosophy states, “Mothering through breastfeeding is the most natural and effective way of understanding and satisfying the needs of the baby. Mother and baby need to be together early and often to establish a satisfying relationship and an adequate milk support in ht early year s the baby has an intense need to be with mother which is as basic as baby’s need for food.
Breastmilk is the superior infant food. For the healthy, full-term baby, breastmilk is the only food necessary until the baby outgrows the need. Alert and active participation by the mother in childbirth is a help in getting breastfeeding off to a good start. Breastfeeding is enhanced and the nursing couple sustained by the loving support, help, and companionship of the baby’s father.
A Father’s unique relationship with his baby is an important element in the child’s development from early infancy. Good nutrition means eating a well-balanced and varied diet of foods in as close to their natural state as possible. From infancy on, children need loving guidance which reflects acceptance of their capabilities and sensitivity to their feelings. We recommend finding a local LLL support group of old-school breastfeeding mothers for this is where you will get reasonable and logical support and information about breastfeeding. We are completely against the use of any type of nipple shield because they prevent the proper stimulation for milk production.
Ever wonder why there are those little bumps around the nipple? They are sensors that when drawn into the baby’s mouth, help stimulate the production of milk. Since the nipple shield covers these, they do more harm than good. If you have a flat nipple, then take your clean fingers and simply pull your nipple out! Baby will take care of the rest. What are the options for sore nipples? What’s the best for sore or chapped nipples is the breast milk itself. You can tough it out, for it will pass I a week or o with warm compresses soaked with breast milk. If you feel you need more help, do NOT under any circumstances put lanolin on them for it is the waxy substance secreted by the sebaceous glands of wood bearing animals as a water resistance protectant. It should NEVER be ingested for it’s indigestible. It is a great skin softener for hands, feet, and dry skin, but should never be used on any skin that is chafed or severely chapped. No matter how they purify it, it is a perfect environment for bacteria and fungus to grow. We are convinced that mothers using any nipple creams containing lanolin can cause colic in a newborn, no matter how little might be ingested by the infant.
We also do not recommend any type of nipple cream for creams force together water-based ingredients with oil-based ones by an emulsifying wax. This is absolutely NOT necessary, so we do not support the use of any blended creams. If you have extremely sensitive nipples, then our nipple salve is a great help, as it is made with mango butter, rice bran oil, and just a trace of Calendula extract. If your nipples are still sore after using the pot of nipple salve, then perhaps you are not holding your baby in the correct position, as even the most aggressive little sucker should not cause sore nipples once the pot is used. If your baby has colic, examine your diet for foods known to irritate a baby through breast milk avoiding any type of nipple product (including ours)… don’t give up, your nipples will toughen in a week. Hang in there, for breastfeeding is the best for both mother and baby.
